Everyone has access to basic services, especially shelter. On Friday the 21st of November 2014 the Member of Executive Council Honourable Violet Siwela launches women in construction programme at Dwarsloop Sports Field. The MEC was accompanied by Executive Mayor Cllr Renias Khumalo of Bushbuckridge Local Municipality. The Department of Human Settlements has dedicated 30 percent of its budget towards this programme to be undertaken by women contractors.
The main objectives of this programme is to assist, develop rural municipalities, empower women and honour their contribution in service delivery. MEC encouraged women not to protest but to stand up and work. During the budget vote in Cape Town this year the Minister Lindiwe Sisulu pronounced that the spheres of government must begin to embrace and make sure that women participate in the mainstream economy and development.
Homeless residents of ward 8, Blakfes Village in Dwarsloop benefited through this launch. This comes after Bushbuckridge Local Municipality with the support of Provincial Department of Human Settlements decided to build those houses during this programme. The MEC and Executive Mayor led by example, they dirt their hands by mixing cement and concrete. Integrated Department of Human Settlements, Bushbuckridge Local Municipality and contractors donated furniture to the benefited families.
The event was attended by among others, Bushbuckridge Local Municipality Mayoral Committee, Regional Director Ehlanzeni Human Settlements and HOD (Head of department) Human Settlements.
