In a protracted Court battle spanning three years, a sitting of the High Court in Pretoria held on the 05 May 2016 dismissed the case brought to it by Acornhoek Plaza Share Block (PTY) LTD on behalf of McCormick Property Developments which barred New African Developments from constructing the state –of- the- art Acornhoek Mall along the busy R40 economic hub.

This came after McCormick Property Developments which owns Acornhoek Plaza applied for a court interdict against New Africa Developments in October 2013. The High Court dismissed the case with costs giving the developers, New Africa Developments on behalf of the Bushbuckridge local municipality the green light to go ahead and build the mall. The Executive Mayor of Bushbuckridge Local Municipality Cllr Renius Khumalo is ecstatic about this and had this to say: “the people of Bushbuckridge in general and Acornhoek in particular were denied development, local economic development and job opportunities for a period of 3 years”.

We hope that the court ruling will bring economic benefits to members of the public and provide them with enjoyable shopping experience. The construction is expected to create more than 2500 temporary jobs and 1500 permanent jobs; this will go a long way in reducing the unemployment rate which is currently at 75%. The soon to be built Acornhoek Mall is one of the many malls to be developed in Bushbuckridge. This was reaffirmed by the Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform Honourable Gugile Nkwiniti during the Presidential Siyahlola Programme in 2015.

Other malls have been approved to be built in Marite and Dwarsloop respectively, however both projects has its challenges in relation to the commencement. Details about the restart of the construction will be communicated to all people of Bushbuckridge and the municipality is appealing to members of the community to play an active and positive role in the process of constructing the mall.
